Quick Review: Godzilla 1954
Leo Reviews… Part 1: Before the Bright Times (Godzilla 1954) Perhaps more than any other kaiju, any other Japanese giant monster, Godzilla is the big one, and not just because of his constantly inflating size over each incarnation. Godzilla is probably one of the most notable in terms of Japanese monster movies, as notable and striking as Freddy Krueger or Jason Vorhees, only larger and more of a monstrous beast. He’s been a lot of things, but whether a savior or beast, destruction tends to follow in his wake, only his preferred target is not the individual, but the city. That’s pretty horrifying when you think about it. Of course, I say “Godzilla” and that’s not what you’re thinking of, is it? I say “Japanese Monster Movies” and that’s not what you’re thinking of, is it? You’re probably thinking something like this: Godzilla’s name has seemingly been diluted by the sheer number of cheesy Ultraman-esque sequels that turn him into a hero. With that in mind, it’s not surprising
